The Impact and Those Affected.
More than 153,000 California residents are under evacuation orders by the county due to the devastating destruction caused by fires in the LA area. Climate experts fear that the Palisades fire (one of the five active fires) is the most costly bush fire recorded in U.S history. The potential property damage and economic losses could amount to as much as $150 billion, estimated by the local, national and global forecast company AccuWeather, “San Diego is experiencing it’s driest start to winter ever, with the period from July 1st to January 8th being the driest on record,” said Ken Clark, an AccuWeather California expert.
With pictures and videos that look like scenes from a Doomsday film, many in southern California are concerned about how the fires are set to progress and destroy. So far the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia and Kenneth fires have claimed 10 lives and 10,000 buildings.
The Rapid Spread.
The rapid growth of the Palisades fire is unparalleled to a spread of any wildfire seen in America before! According to charts posted by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, over the course of just one night the fire spread just over 16,220 acres across the county. Santa Monica, Malibu, and the Pacific Coast Highway are just a few places that have been conquered by the flames of the Palisades fire.
Help.
Both nonprofit organizations and humanitarian groups are stepping in to provide food, water, and shelter. A number of organizations are providing evacuation centers, mobilized kitchens, funds to rebuild homes, and essential supplies for those who lost their homes during the course of the past week.
