Tim Burton is synonymous with Beetlejuice. One of Michael Keaton’s most popular roles was that of Beetleguese. He starred alongside Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Winona Ryer in the 1988 film. However, Beetlejuice wasn’t the original name of the film; the studio originally wanted to name it House Ghosts.
After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose help quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.
Initially, Tim Burton wanted Sammy David Jr to play the part of Beetlejuice but the studio hated the casting choice.Originally Micheal Keaton turned down the role because he didn’t understand it but he changed his mind after seeing Pee wee herman and meeting tim burton. Micheal Keaton came up with much of the characters’ look himself Keaton told the makeup department he wanted mold on his face and his hair as if he stuck his finger in an electric socket and he also requested that the wardrobe department send his clothes from all different time periods. Even though beetle juice is the title character of the film, Micheal Keaton is only on screen for a total of 14 minutes.
Tim Burton has a dreamlike gothic style. The black and white stripe suit is such a popular costume choice and is very recognizable. Even Winona Ryder’s classic style is iconic. Lydia’s wedding dress is a bright red which goes with the old saying “ married in red better off dead”.
In the long awaited sequel, there are many references to the original and his other films including Monica bellucci’s body being pieced together similar to how sallys was in the nightmare before christmas except they’re using staples not stitches. The story of the sequel picks up with Lydia’s daughter and her misadventures with Beetlejuice.
