It is a heavily-debated topic and controversial at times. It has been questioned over and over again. Combined with the savory flavor of pizza, pineapple adds a nice, and frankly needed hint of sweetness to meals. Pepperoni, cheese and tomato sauce are typical, but a change from the ordinary can definitely be worth it.
Pineapple is not only okay on pizza, but it actually enhances the overall flavor of the food. People may be skeptical, (I was too at some point), but the addition is a total game-changer.
We have seen many interesting and, quite truthfully, questionable food combinations that became popular over time, like fries and ice cream and chicken with waffles. Pineapple on pizza? That just compliments the pizza if you ask me. In fact, pairing sweetness with savory is used in cuisines all around the world. Just think of a charcuterie board. If prosciutto and melon go together, pineapple and pizza can.
It is added all the time, ham, pepperoni, jalapenos, all the salty + spicy toppings. But to really enhance those flavors, this fruit is the answer. It can also add that variety to usual orders. With all that being said though, the pineapples themselves are important. If they are canned or coated with sugar, they are practically sabotaging your experience. Make sure they are fresh and/or fire-roasted. There will be a big difference in the flavor.
I’ll leave it with this: Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but with a few changes, pineapple could become a much more popular pizza topping.
