The film is based on Mattel’s Barbie doll. The first Barbie doll was manufactured in 1959 by Mattel and named after Ruth Handler’s daughter Barbara. Ruth Handler was inspired to create Barbie after seeing her daughter play with paper dolls.
Barbie land was created almost entirely with practical effects, the backdrops were all hand painted.The Barbie dreamhouse, featured in the film, is the best selling Barbie toy. It was first introduced in 1962.
Barbie has donned many looks and had over 200 jobs including fashion, zoo doctor, business executive, secretary and Mcdonalds cashier. In the film, Margot Robbie wore 18 wigs and 30 hair pieces across the production. Totally hair Barbie was a best selling doll. Oscar de la renta was Barbie’s first designer collaborator in 1985
Ryan Gosling, who played Ken, improvised the “sublime” line. Ken is Barbie’s male counterpart. Nearly every character was named Barbie or Ken. All of the Ken actors worked out in the same gym to bond together.
Besides Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film starred: America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon, Will Farrell, and Issa Rae to name a few. Every Sunday the cast gathered at a cinema in Notting Hill to watch films related to the Barbie storyline.
