Film Review: Hocus Pocus
Originally titled, Halloween House, Hocus Pocus was released in 1993. It has been a fan favorite ever since. Hocus pocus was released in July so that it wouldn’t compete with “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
According to IMDb, “A teenage boy named Max and his little sister move to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.”
The film stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. They play the Sanderson sisters who are a trio of witches. In the script all three witches were wearing plain black witches costumes but they decided to choose a design for each witch based on their personality.
The film also stars Binks the cat. He was actually played by multiple cats and animatronics and they would use different cats based on their personalities so if they needed a cat that could jump they would use that cat if they needed a cat that would cuddle with the kids they would use that cat instead.
Binks the cat wasn’t the only creature on set. Billy actually had real moths come out of his mouth. Yikes!!
There are several songs in the film. The most popular was “I put a spell on you” . It wasn’t even part of the script until another writer came along and added it in.
The film has been popular every year at Halloween. What is your favorite film about witches?
